Aurora Elementary School is highlighting our new fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Bettie Ziegler. She has been teaching at the elementary level for over 20 years. Outside the classroom, Mrs. Ziegler enjoys time with her family including all seven of her children! Her youngest child is starting to study at the University of Cincinnati. Mrs. Ziegler also enjoys reading, cross stitching, and golfing.

Aurora Elementary School students in Mrs. Hornberger's class read Kate DiCamillo's "Because of Winn-Dixie." The students sharpened their reading comprehension skills by working in pairs to analyze how characters reacted to eating the Littmus Lozenges. This fictional candy was created by a civil war veteran who wanted to add more sweetness to the world but the secret ingredient to to the candy was sorrow. When characters consumed the candy, they enjoyed the taste but also remarked how it conjured up sad thoughts. The analysis the students completed allowed them to better understand the emotions and development of the story's characters, as well as to piece together the true nature of the Littmus Lozenges before it was revealed.

Fourth grade students in Mrs. Detmer's class and Mrs. Lows's class at Aurora Elementary School made their animal studies more concrete through writing their own research report. Students read and cited a variety of online and offline sources as they wrote a report detailing the nature of their favorite animal.

Mrs. Nobbe's sixth grade class at Aurora Elementary School are learning how to solve equations with negative and positive integers and fractions. To help conceptualize the math involved, students learned how they can use a linear graph (one axis) to visually represent the increases and decreases when combining positive and negative numbers.
